Consolidating 1500 employees from several locations across Melbourne to a tower in the heart of the Docklands precinct, AGL’s state-of-the-art activity based working facilities gives the group the flexibilty to organise, connect and adapt teams to deliver a great customer service experience now and in the future.

AGL commissioned HASSELL, Built and Montlaur Project Services to ensure the design and layout of the workplace improves the productivity and collaboration of AGL’s employees to meet the changing needs of their customers. CSM National Business Development Manager, Victoria Harris talks to HASSELL Snr Interior Designers, Robert Ryan and Jacqui Low about the aspirations and specifications for the project.

AGL’s new headquarters consolidated several accommodations to one location. What design challenges were amplified by merging a large number of staff and multiple business units together?

A critical element with any change, especially a business going from a traditional fixed desk environment to a flexible or agile environment, is to ensure that all parts of the business are involved in the process. Staff at all levels need to feel that they own the change. For AGL we needed to make sure that the various business units were considered and that the design reflected their needs. The challenge was ensuring that there was a balance between providing specific needs of the business units, but flexible enough to cater for future change if/when that business unit moves or no longer exists.

Was there a pilot space for this project, and if so what level of engagement did AGL’s employees have during the design process?

Yes there was a pilot space for the project. Teams were rotated through the pilot and asked to give feedback on their experience and work setting, which was taken into the design of the fitout.

Efficiency and creativity are key ingredients to a successful business. While much emphasis is placed on how these factors affect a business product, companies are also seeking ways to improve their internal operations. How does the Smarter Working model support these needs?

The old AGL workplace was a fixed desk environment, where there was very little collaboration or ‘collisions’ between people or business units. Smarter working was created to change the way staff interacted with each other and to increase knowledge sharing by creating a dynamic workplace that enabled the AGL workforce to be a more efficient and creative business.

Reducing paper consumption can improve efficiency and reduce costs. Has paper reduction been a consideration for the environmentally conscious energy provider?

Yes this was key to the project. It also fed into the Greenstar requirement of the project.

In terms of storage requirements, how did this affect the specification of storage?

Storage was heavily reduced, in the ABW environment no one has a fixed position and so storage was centrally located in a neighbourhood for team storage access. Storage was reduced from 1.3LM per person to .25 LM per person. Rolling Storage units were allocated for each level allowing high density storage that doesn’t consume a lot of floor space.

CSM congratulates HDR Rice Daubney for winning the 2016 Sir Arthur G Stephenson NSW Architecture Award for the Novartis Building in Sydney.

Designed by HDR Rice Daubney and built by Ganellen the new building consolidates four Novartis Australian offices into one location, and is characterised by two conceptual directions: caring for patients and science-based innovation. The interaction between these two components forms a building of clean lines and precise transparent forms, supported by a series of warm curved elements that clearly expresses Novartis’ humanist mission and culture of innovation.

Designed as an activity-based work environment, a variety of settings offer associates across all levels of the company the freedom to choose how they would like to work each day. The design revolves around a central atrium that links all levels and creates a series of human-scaled formal and informal interaction opportunities throughout the building, promoting spontaneous and serendipitous communication between associates throughout the workplace.

CSM AND SERVICE NSW CENTRES

CSM was specified by the NSW government to provide office storage solutions for over 60 locations as part of the rollout project of their new Service Centres.

Service NSW has been designed to be the single service delivery provider for the New South Wales state government, removing siloed stand-alone government shop fronts such as motor registries, Fair Trading counters and combining over 30 contact centres, 900 websites and 150 retail outlets into a One-Stop-Shop.

The governments agenda of service unification and their customer-centric approach were key considerations in the design of the new centres. CSM worked closely with architecture firm Warren and Mahoney to find the most suitable product mix to meet the unique needs of each centre in this unprecedented government project.

CSM provided front of house storage solutions, tambour door cabinets and back of house personnel storage lockers to facilitate ease of work for employees.  Self Based Rolling Storage, cabinets and shelving were also installed at each location and customised to facilitate the administrative requirements for each centre.

CSM’s capacity to locally manufacture products allowed for rapid adaptation and flexibility in providing customised products for different geo-locations across NSW.  Pre-assembled solutions were created for regional areas and the specific requirements of each centre were considered and catered to with unique storage solutions.

Architecture firm Bates Smart was assigned the design project for the company’s recent relocation to new offices on 1 O’Connell Street Sydney, with build managed by Schiavello Constructions.

The team at ODCM were  kind enough to host our latest CSM TWO GOOD Soup Luncheon.

This weeks lunch jars were created by three of  Sydney’s superstar Chefs .  Acme’s Mitch Orr  created a Celeriac, Cavalo Nero and Roast Hazelnut soup whilst Quay’s head chef  Peter Gilmore offered a delicious Korean Spiced Chicken Noodle soup. We just loved Pasi Petanen‘s  hearty Macaroni, Onion and Black Pepper soup!

The knowledge that with every soup jar we buy one free jar is donated to Sydney’s shelters warms our heart! The ever changing gourmet menu keeps us hungry for more TWO GOOD soups.

 

 

STATE LIBRARY NSW ART STORAGE

The State Library of NSW located on the corner of Macquarie Street and Shakespeare Place, is the oldest library in Australia. It is a unique cultural institution and contains a comprehensive and diverse collection of Australian and international research material including significant collections of rare paintings, manuscripts, art and literature

The safekeeping of artworks whilst in storage or on display is a priority for any art museum, art gallery and historic collection. The recent renovation undertaken at the library included the creation of a new designated storage basement. This provided an excellent opportunity to improve the level of safety and conservation of the collection. 

CSM were selected through a competitive tendering process by the State Library of NSW to design and manufacture customised art racks for the Library’s collection storage.

The CSM Art Rack System designed for the State Library is comprised of dual mesh panels on framing with 40mm of clear space. Art works are thus separated back to back with no obstruction and artworks may be suspended in safety without contact with each other.  All components are powder coated giving a hard wearing and conservation inert grade finish. 

The roll-out panels are extremely versatile and allow storage of all forms and sizes of paintings, maps, posters, street signs, prints, drawings and fabrics. In addition, CSM Art Racks may also store any cultural artefact such as narrow irregular shaped or long items including and not limited to spears, bark paintings, clothing and stamp cases. The panels are equipped with heavy-duty load bearing wheels with polyurethane tyres, which provide smooth operation to eliminate vibration further protecting delicate artworks and exhibits.

The anti-tip overhead guides ensure trouble-free, safe and smooth movement of each panel. In addition, the CSM safety hook system provides fail-safe fastening so artworks cannot be accidentally dislodged during operation as protection and elimination of damage to artworks is paramount. This system can also provide locking and screening of individual panels. This can provide security and limited access, where required, for fragile, sensitive and valuable artworks 

With a smooth and easy hand-controlled operation, the system moves with ease providing full access to all materials enabling the simultaneous display and storage of collections.  It is designed to optimise space reduction as well as improve ease of use for employees. This is a practical, safe and highly cost-effective system with the advantage of extra visibility and accessibility.

We love customized lockers! It was great to see creative user interaction with CSM lockers at a recent visit to a client’s office.

Personnel claimed ownership of locker space in this agile working environment by using toys placed in the mail slots to identify and mark their personal spaces.

These “Toy Wars” are testament to a playful and happy working environment that allows staff the opportunity to express their creativity.
